Using Digg as a marketing tool

October 15, 2007 · Filed Under marketing

You may or may not like the methods I am about to talk about, but nonetheless they do work and help to get you moving forward in the right direction. We all hate spam and many times there is a fine line between what spam is and what it isn’t. Spam has taken on so many forms. It’s not just sending mass email or email spoofing anymore. It can be through useless blog commenting or instant messaging or any other form in which unknown people are contacted to promote something.

So then when it comes to Digg what is spamming and what is not? Is it ok that a friend sent a shout out to a bunch of people on a friends list and your article got dugg so much that it makes the front page? Or Is it only ok for a good article to make the first page by just dumb chance?

Everyone has to make their own decisions on that. However Digg offers so much for people that want to use it as a marketing tool. This is because Digg is a community based social network of people that spread the word for you. After all, how would 75 percent of the diggers even know your article or post even existed if they never had been told about it from other diggers? Thats the power of social marketing. Whatever it is that you are marketing whether it’s a particular product or just a blog you will find that yu must get in touch with someone that will get in touch with 2 more people.

Digg is a snowball effect, and if used wisely and moderately it can be a marketing tool for you. Below is a list of the key ways that you can use it to help market yourself and make friends that will read your blog.

  • Naturally look for articles of interest to you and be the first to Digg them. This will get you noticed by other diggers.
  • Comment on anything of interest. The more funny, witty or meaningful a comment is the more it will get dugg and the more popularity you will get.
  • When you get dugg, add the digger of your story to your friends list. The more diggers you get the more friends you get.
  • Instant Message the friends you have if they have similar interests. DON’T SPAM THEM. Merely make chit chat and find out what their interests are. Ask them about their blog or whatever they are interested first. Most of the time they will ask you about yours which will give you an opportunity to let them check out your blog or website. Obviously if your site is beneficial they will like it and subscribe to your feed.
  • Once you post an article you have the opportunity to make a shout to your friends. This is the time if you feel the article would be interesting to those on your friends list to let them know about it. Choose wisely and if you have been asked by a friend to not send shouts, then it would be best to abide by that.

You will find the above mentioned tips to be beneficial. I am not a long time Digger but I have been enjoying the comments and posts of others and have made it to the Front page of Digg with the last article I wrote by following the above mentioned steps. This has proved to be a successful marketing tool if used correctly and implemented at the right time. The use of Digg as a marketing tool can be effective for you if you use it wisely.

I have personally found out about a wealth of great new services through Digg.com. I think one of the keys, of using Digg as a marketing tool, lies with walking that fine “spam” line, especially with the shout feature.

I agree Elmer. If done reasonably and at the right time. I think people use the shout feature multiple times daily which can get tiring.

Yeah but what about when others game the system?

I also agree that this is an interesting article & opens up a new area for people to push their own barrow. Hopefully I can take advantage of this as it is very hard to get a message across without being considered to be spamming.

hehe, I liked “It’s not just sending mass email or email spoofing anymore” which does kinda suggest it once was just about it ;)

Nice summary article, maybe a second thought on it and some more detail?

At least it works as a “discovery” tool. And I’ve transformed it into your marketing tool, take a look:

My blog is one-day old and so far today I have gotten 129 unique visitors, all of them due to social media sites. Just on the basis of today I would rank Stumbleupon as the most useful, followed by Reddit second and Digg third.
