Tips when transferring from a hosting company

November 2, 2007, Category: Hosting

apache123.gifI see it all to often, A site with no content. The reason being is because the person that moved from another hosting company changed nameservers before having the content moved. So heres some hosting tips to keep in mind that are rather simple but will save you loads of frustration.

  • Keep your old host when you purchase from a new hosting company until you are 100 percent sure that everything(content) has been transferred over.
  • Changing nameservers should be the last step. Do it in the evening when there is less traffic from your target audience so you lose less and have a better transition.
  • Always make a FULL backup before changing hosts.
  • Download and save any email that is important beforehand.
  • Make sure to change any configuration files to reflect the new username on your account. For example, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal etc…
  • If you are able to move the files, save yourself the time of the host doing it and just be done with it.

Keep in mind that when you move from one host to another there is no guarantee that everything will be just perfect. No company is perfect, and relying on your host 100 percent is not the best thing. So get your hands a little dirty and test things. Remember as long as you have full backups of your site and databases you should be fine.
