Alternative to Windows Vista

September 29, 2007, Category: Tech stuff

Windows Vista has turned out to be anything than compatible for users. Many programs will not work with Vista or encounter other problems. This has caused many people like myself to look at Vista as a junk version of Windows. If you haven’t already purchased a new PC with Vista preinstalled I will tell how not so great it is. And what solution I found that I am satisfied with temporarily.

After I purchased a new laptop that I got a great deal on I wasn’t happy to find it came preinstalled with Vista. I went through the boot up process and couldn’t even get it to work from the get go so I brought it back and they gave me another laptop. After booting Vista on my laptop I noticed a difference in pace than what I was using with my home PC which had XP and thought why is a laptop with a Centrino duo so slow. I soon realized how horrible Vista was after installing photoshop. That started having issues and not working properly. I tested out some other things and the only thing I got to work was AVG antivirus protection as I hate Norton.

I wondered what might be an alternative to Vista since there are no updates for it and that might be a while. So I decided to check into Linux because it’s free and I just wanted to be able to have something else so I didn’t think about Vista for a while. I found Ubuntu and realized there were a lot of happy people with this operating system and a ton of support online. And if I wanted to I could order the installation free!! Thats right they will send you the installation disks for free.

After installing Ubuntu Linux I soon realized why people love it and I began to love it too. If you are wanting to get your mind off Vista for a while and wait for the updates which will come sometime in 2008, and you want something thats hard to break Ubuntu is for you. You can download it off the internet. Burn it to a CD and install it as a separate operating system or run it on a different partition with your Vista installed as well. Just visit the Ubuntu home page here.
